Cover Reveal: Servance by Haven Cage

Severance
Anticipated release: Spring of 2017
Tag line: What doesn't make you evil, makes you stronger
In Severance, a dark, adult urban fantasy novel from the Faltering Souls series, Neveah has to face the overpowering gravity of her choice to save those she loves while striving for strength to fight her greatest threat—herself.
Nevaeh Richards makes her declaration. Living a life in which she has few possessions, she sacrifices the only thing of worth she has to offer—the precious thing those fiends want the most—all for the slim chance of redeeming the souls of George, the man who raised her, and Gavyn, the Light Celata who holds a piece of her heart.
Her gifts are unfurling now, but so is a fierce, unpredictable beast inside her. While she struggles to keep herself—and the beast—in check, she has to play the part of a Dark Celata and fulfill every wickedly tempting task the evil beings command of her. Each mission she goes on, each time she uses her gifts, the line she toes between the woman she used to be and the monster she reluctantly yearns to become grows thinner.
As Nevaeh deals with her own turmoil, Archard watches the world he's accepted as his own begin to suffer for the mistakes he’s made. The sacred laws which segregate the realms and hinder demons from freely moving among humans are less and less effective with each passing day. He’s failed to keep Nevaeh out of Evil’s clutches, and so the shadows of Hell are creeping through. In an attempt to right his wrongs—and heal the hole in his heart—Archard chases his elusive woman, but every lead that should bring him closer to her only ends with more questions about who she is, where she comes from, and how to save her—if he can save her at all.
Will Nevaeh survive the soul-severing decision she’s made?
Will those who love Nevaeh survive her?

Falter
In FALTER, a dark New Adult/Adult Urban Fantasy novel, Nevaeh Richards thinks she has found a chance to leave her homeless life behind. When the spirit of the only father she knows is wrongfully taken to Hell, Nevaeh is hurled into a world haunted by monstrous demons, rogue Guardian angels, love that is beyond her control, and a soul-threatening choice between the inherent evil inside her and the faltering faith she is struggling to grasp.
Nevaeh and George have lived on the streets as father and daughter since he found her, alone and unconscious, many years ago. When they start a new life employed at Joe's cafe, Nevaeh experiences debilitating visions and frightening apparitions. Adding to the troubling path her life has taken, George suddenly becomes ill and an Animus demon takes his soul hostage in Hell. Unfortunately, the ransom may be more than Nevaeh can afford.
As Nevaeh spirals into this supernatural world, Gavyn—the handsome cafĂ©-owner—tries to convince her that she belongs to a hidden race of people with God-given gifts known as Celatum, and she may be a key player in the Celestial war. However, even after all the otherworldly events she experiences, Nevaeh continues to deny her part in it all.
Meanwhile, Archard—a stranger she feels undeniably bonded to—mysteriously wanders in and out of her life, offering none of the answers she suspects he holds.
Will Nevaeh attain the faith it requires to fulfill her fate as a Celata and take part in the Celestial fight? Or will she give into the darkness that calls to her for the sake of George's soul and damn herself to Hell?
Warning: this novel contains adult language and sexual content. Readers 18 years and older only, please.

Review: Coming Home by Teresa Keefer

Purchase Coming Home: Amazon or Barnes & Noble
Author: +Teresa Keefer
Publisher:  Self-published
Released: February 26, 2013
Official Synopsis:
Newly divorced Maggie Coulter-Stanford returns to her roots in Eastern Tennessee for a new start. Claiming the farm that her grandparents left to her, she is determined to turn the dilapidated piece of property into a guest retreat. As if the work on the farm was not enough for her to worry about, she has to deal with her philandering ex-husband who is in bed with a ruthless real estate developer along with her materialistic and meddlesome mother. Not to mention coming face to face with the man that broke her heart when he left her years earlier. But it's not all as it seems. Will Maggie enjoy her dream of coming home?
My Review:
When I first heard about Teresa Keefer, it was from her daughter.  I had not given it much thought afterwards though.  Months late, I then heard about Teresa from another friend and fellow beta reader who had just finished reading one of Teresa's books and figured it was high time I looked into this indie author to see what she and her books were all about.
Coming Home is mainly set in Tennessee with references to where the main character previously lived.  The main character is a woman, Maggie Coulter-Stanford,  who just divorced her very rich, materialistic, cheating husband.  After the divorce she packed up her things and moved from Chicago to a little farm town in Tennessee where she had inherited her grandparents home and land; full of pastures, a barn, and of course the house which was her favorite place to stay during the summers when she was a child.

As you get into the story you learn more about Maggie, her best friend Dixie, and the local veterinarian/ex-boyfriend Sean.  You find out about the heartbreak and deception that Maggie and her first love, Sean, experienced when they were younger, why at first they blamed one another for it, and then the truth of why the two never made it past the summer they fell in love.

As a beta reader for authors, I pick up on things that some readers would not notice such as grammatical errors, referring to a person, but then coming back with a completely different name later on for said person, or how descriptive and vivid the author is when setting a scene.  As far as the grammatical errors go that does not make or break a star unless there is not understanding any of it because let's face it, every author and book, whether indie or famous authors have grammatical errors in their books. As for the scenes; for the most part the author sets the scenes to the point where you feel as if you are actually there without going overboard!

The only issue  I had with this book and the reason why this is not a five star review was that I felt the author slipped over important parts that needed to be in the book, added things that she never came back around to explain, or rushed through the ending; better known as plot holes which can make or break a good book in my opinion.

However, with all of this being said, would I recommend this read to a book lover?   You betcha!  This book was a wonderful love story with a happy ending!
About the Author:
Teresa Keefer is a self-published author who is a romantic at heart. She has also signed with Soul Mate Publishing for her Vengeance Trilogy.

First-hand experience breathes life into her stories because they are set in places that she has visited. Coming Home is set in the beautiful, peaceful Smoky Mountain area of East Tennessee, which is her favorite place to relax. Blood Vengeance is set in the steamy, seductive New Orleans, a place where she and her daughters visited and to which she hopes to return. We should also watch for locations such as Las Vegas, New York City, Washington D.C. as well as some fictional locations that she has created in her own mind. She says that if she is able to start working on her bucket list soon, there will also be a visit to Ireland and hopefully a story from there too.

Teresa is a lifelong Indiana resident living in a rural community in the east central portion of the state. As a single mother of three daughters, she returned to college as an adult and earned an MBA from Indiana Institute of Technology. Teresa has spent over 25 years in the human resource profession and has often threatened to write a humorous depiction of life in the human resource profession. Oh, the stories she could tell! She has been known to debate political and social issues with passion and generally does not back down, sometimes resorting to dry sarcasm to prove a point. In addition to spending time with her daughters and grandchildren she has a lot of other interests that compete for her time such as cooking, sewing, gardening, crafting, studying spiritualism, and traveling.

Question 1: What are you writing?
I didn’t find my love of reading until I was around twenty-three years old. A friend gave me the first novel in the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer and was hooked. After that, I researched Mrs. Meyer and found that a dream inspired her to write. I thought, “Hey, I could do that. I have thousands of crazy dreams locked away in my mind. Why not write a book about one?” I have always struggled with my spiritual side, not so much doubting my beliefs in God, but more myself and the “man-made” side of religion. I felt like writing would be a good way to work some of those inner demons and doubts out.
After years of learning the craft, and reading new books that opened my mind to the many worlds I could escape to, I finished my first novel. Now that I’ve nurtured my mind and soul into that of a writer’s, I don’t see myself any other way. This is who I am now. Though it’s still hard for me some days, I get a little better each day.
Question 2: Have you always want to be an author?
I had no idea that I would be an author as a child. Reading and writing was something I was forced to do in school, not something I did for fun. I was more of a visual arts kind of person, using paint and pencils to express myself, but looking back now, I know that I just hadn’t found the right book to spark the yearning in me. Thank God, I did later on!
Question 3: Who are your favorite authors?
There are so many authors that I admire and enjoy, but Leigh Bardugo, Karen Marie Moning, and Jamie McGuire speak to my soul and inspire me to be a better writer.
Question 4: What would you sat to someone who is just starting out as a writer?
Being a new writer myself, I would advise those following me to research everything on writing, publishing, networking they can. Get a good grip on the reality of it because publishing is an intimidating industry, and if you are not serious about it, you won’t get far, unfortunately. Discouragement is an emotion you will feel often, but I firmly believe that if you are diligent, you can make it. You may not have a fat wallet in the end, but it’s better to try and fail, knowing you gave it your best than avoiding the trials of being a writer when you could have been magical.
Question 5: Do you ever put any part of yourself in your characters?
My characters are very much based on fears and doubts that I have all the time. I also instill my sarcasm and emotions in them pretty regularly. On the flip side of that, they represent parts of me that I can’t be, or won’t allow myself to be, in real life as well.
Question 6:How old were you when your first book was published?
My release day is actually the day before my thirty-third birthday. I set it up as a new year’s resolution goal, determined to get this damn book published before my birthday!
Question 7 and 8: How many books have you written? Do you have any more books coming out?  What are their titles?
I currently only have Falter up for publication, however, book 2 in the Faltering Soul series us under way. I also have the beginnings of a stand-alone novel in toe.
Question 9: What do you hope readers will take from your books?
I hope they find enjoyment in my story while considering the uncontrollable circumstances that drive people to make bad decisions. Life is not black and white, right and wrong.
Question 10: What do you do to get ready to write?
I am very much a creature that needs a good atmosphere. I mostly write at a fantastic local coffee shop, listening to rock music, and drinking the writer’s drug of choice…coffee! I personally don’t plan much when it comes to preparing. I’m more of a write-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of gal, leaving my outlining to a time after most of my thoughts are already on the paper.
Question 11
I’ve been fortunate to avoid the dark abyss of writer’s block. If I do happen to be in a particularly difficult time of finding words, I tend to leave the work for a few days. Sometimes a little vacation can clarify the tunnel vision. This is also when the outlining comes in handy. I start going back through the chapters and summarizing them one by one, focusing on my plot and details. This usually brings me out of the slump.
Question 12: What is your favorite type of book to read?  Does that type influence your books?
My favorite genres are fantasy and romance, and yes, it absolutely influences my own writing. I love being to get away from reality, to escape to worlds where anything is possible. As far as writing styles, I gravitate toward authors that use a lot of descriptive words. I need to play the scenes in my mind like a movie, which makes me a slower reader, but I enjoy it so much more.

Fun Facts
  1. Favorite Food: Anything pasta
  2. Favorite Color: Purple (you can probably tell by all the purple I use in my graphics )
  3. Favorite Sweet Treat: Dark chocolate
  4. Favorite Mixed Drink: Forget the mixing, just give me some vodka and a lemon with sugar, or a glass of Duplin wine.
  5. Favorite thing to shop for: Fingernail polish (not a big shopper like most girls)
  6. Lucky Number: Seven
  7. Favorite Book: Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning
  8. Favorite Movie: It’s impossible for me to answer this question…so not fair to make me choose only one.

Review: Only Human by J.D. Estrada

Purchase Only Human: Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
Author: J.D. Estrada
Publisher:  CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Released: April 16,2013

Official Synopsis:
Nathaniel Runnels isn’t a fan of life. He isn’t a fan of the news, which is a bust because he’s a reporter. He’s lost faith in journalism, in the truth, in civilization and in himself. So it’s quite the surprise when he gets swept up in a quest to save the world. Perception and reality collide as one man faces one question, would you sacrifice your humanity to save mankind? Only Human is a tale where the truth is revealed about vampires, about therians (make sure you don’t call them werewolves), about angels, about demons, the photogeni plant people and humanity as we supposedly know it. This isn’t your typical book, these aren’t your typical vampires and what has been said is fiction, may actually be truer than the history you’ve been sold.

My Review:
When I first found out that J.D. Estrada was going to have a book of his published I was overjoyed as I have been privileged to read a lot of his work over the years.  When I was told about what the book was about, I was instantly in love - vampires!  Who does not love vampires?  Anyhow, once I got the book and started reading it, it became apparent to me that the book, Only Human, was not just about vampires.  The book is about so much more than that!  The book in composes many different entities: angels, demons, vampires, therians, photogeni plant people, as well as humans.

The book is very detailed, but has an even and smooth flow. The book begins with an abduction of a human named Nathaniel Runnels who is bored with life.  He is given two choices: help or die.  Naturally, anyone with those choices would choose to live, as Nathaniel did.  Nathaniel plays a huge role in the book and essentially (SPOILER ALERT): becomes the hero.  I will not divulge how he becomes the hero or of what he is the hero of, but just know when you are reading the book and you are trying to figure out everyone's role that Nathaniel's is big!

You will encounter some unexpected references in this book.  They are by no means out of place and fit well into the story and what is currently happening.  References include: Pearl Jam lyrics, other book references, and 80s and 90s pop-culture.

As I said I was drawn in when I found out the book was about vampires, but J.D.'s writing makes you NOT want to put the book down.  This book is part of a series and personally, I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book!  I want to see where the author takes the characters and learn more about them. This book is highly recommend to anyone - get yourself a copy today, you will not be disappointed!

About the Author:

After years working in advertising, J.D. Estrada decided there were better ways to write fiction. Born on August 13th, he shares birthdays with Alfred Hitchcock and Fidel Castro... an interesting coincidence since his mom is Cuban and he loves a good story.

Truth be told, he always dreamt about being an inventor, he just didn't know he'd end up doing it using words. Where some people choose to invent new products, he has chosen to invent worlds through words.

In college, he studied psychology for 3 years before he realized that if he finished, he'd need a psychologist for himself. Not being too enticed by the whole full circle nature of that trajectory, he switched to Marketing, Advertising... and Psychology. He just couldn't let it go.

An avid reader of Science Fiction and Fantasy, throughout his life, he's always loved writing and connecting with people. Mind you, although he loves those genres, his reading tastes are as eclectic as his musical passions. So from rock to salsa to classical music, he also reads and writes in a variety of genres and is just as satisfied writing a review or a poem as he is in writing his next novel. One of his blogs is called For Writing out Loud and on this blog he's been able to connect to hundreds of fellow readers who share the passions of writing and connecting.

This obsession with the human aspect of who we are is deeply embedded in all his work and his first book is no exception. Though still starting its journey towards the top 100 Amazon books, Only Human is the first link within the Human Cycle, a three book exploration of humanity through fiction.

He is currently working on the second installment of the Human Cycle; a young adult adventure; a compilation of essays, poetry and short stories and consistently puts out free material on his blog (jdestradawriter.blogspot.com) and rants with zest on Twitter via @jdestradawriter. He also has instagram if you want to see what he's getting up to or what delicious beer he may recommend.

His favorite band is Pearl Jam, he was born in Puerto Rico, he bodyboards and to him, playing a guitar is as therapeutic as a notebook. So by all means, visit, say hi and connect.

He hopes you are doing well and that you enjoy your visit to any of the literary planets he has lovingly crafted.

I give this book:  ★★★★★

After months in hiding, Arena and her brother, Gabriel, fight to survive the aftermath while they trudge through unkindly terrain across the country to rejoin their friends, but what they soon discover may staunch their journey. The government’s failed attempt to rebirth a broken nation has caused civil unrest like no other.

With an opportunity to escape to a permanent safe haven, Arena risks her life to lead the new fellowship. Into The Darkness captures the cruel truth behind our darkest secrets which may often cause us to question our faith. In this graphic second installment of the LAST LIGHT FALLING series, J.E. Plemons continues the grim story of Arena Power’s fate, testing her faith while she and her brother search for an answer to their survival in a brooding world filled with chaos.

My Review:
I read and reviewed the first book of Last Light Falling back in February of 2015 and fell in love with the book, the characters, and the storyline.  When I heard that book two was released I could not wait to read and review it! I did not think that the author could out do book one, but I was definitely wrong!  J.E. Plemons did not disappoint!

The book begins with a quote from C.S. Lewis and then picks right back up from where book one had ended with the struggles, growth, and strength of Arena and her brother Gabe.  The book is intense; it pulls you in from the beginning and takes you on a ride that you are sure to not forget.  Arena and Gabe's journey leads them back to their friends and changes everything they know all over again.

Much like book one, book two is full of betrayal, war, survival, and death. These actions and scenarios are what pulls you in, gets you thinking, and also makes you wonder how far from the truth this all could possibly be.  The second book is just as detailed as the first so you can put yourself in the shoes of the characters, but is not so detailed that it bores the reader.

J.E. Plemons out did himself on this book.  I cannot wait to see what else he has to bring in this series!  I honestly think the best part of this series so far is the growth that the characters make through the books.  They overcome so much - their faith may waver, but they never give up!

About the Author:

Jay spent his years in Nashville working in the music industry for companies like RCA, Sony, Zomba, and Dreamworks, all of which gave him a bitter taste in his mouth. Aside from working directly with many famous artists, his conclusion of the industry was a tainted cesspool of filth. He dedicated his carpentry skills for a while creating custom fine furniture, manned a press for a print shop, was a studio musician, played drums for a few famous artists, taught high school band for a year, giving IT support for the Texas Legislature, and now an aspiring author. He has no claim to fame, nor does he want any.

Jay has been fortunate enough to experience many things in his life, some of which were humbling, others fulfilling, and because of that, he's grown to be patient and content. He's willing to struggle, fail, sacrifice, and fall before he learns to move on from those experiences. He's not afraid to die, but willing to live as long as he's able. Even though he'd like to see his kids grow old, Jay understands that every day is precious, yet uncertain. He live with the best intentions that everything is going to be okay until it isn't, and when that happens, He's free to just let go.

Topher Carlson is one of the biggest jocks on campus. All the guys want to be him, all the girls want to claim him. When secrets are uncovered, Topher’s life spins wildly out of control.

They are far from friends when the school year begins, but each will impact the other’s life in ways they never dreamed possible. Can Ciera help Topher realize that popularity and status mean nothing in the real world? Can Topher help Ciera learn the true meaning of living?

Sometimes you have to let go to really live. Sometimes being alive means taking risks.

Learning to Live is the first book in the Infinite Love series.

Review:
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Learning to Live opens with an overview of who the book is going to be about in the perspective of each person.  In other words it is an alternating first person perspective stand alone that does not end in a cliff hangers.  Now, I know above I have listed the series the book is in, but this book does not necessarily have to be read before the second book, My Forever.  However, it is suggested as it gives you more insight to the main characters of book two.

The main point of views for this book are Ciera Nelson and Topher Carlson.  Ciera is your average, low income girl, who does not have a lot things, money, or friends, and is constantly bullied in school by the popular kids because of her looks and "weirdness".   However, Topher is her complete opposite.  He is your hands down, drop dead gorgeous, football player that every girl in school wants to be with who just happens to be dating a cheerleader that every guy wants to be with.  Topher seems to have it all and have it all together, but his home life is something that he hides from everyone.  Ciera and Topher have nothing in common or so they think!

My favorite lines from the book:
"I love how romance authors can make you feel every emotion in their books, that you feel invested in the characters. By the end of the story, you feel as if you know them on some kind of level, and you mourn the loss of them when it's over." -Kira Adams

These lines play very true to this book. In fact the best thing about Kira Adams and her writing is that she pulls you right in from the start (I read the book in ONE sitting it was that good)!  Kira definitely makes you fall in love with some characters while she builds a love/hate feeling towards other characters.  You will absolutely love Ciera and her innocence from the start.  You will feel sorry for her, feel every emotion she feels, and end up hating those who bully her and treat her wrong.

Topher, well that is another story.  You will hate him and his group of friends...at first.  As the story plays out, Topher changes and turns over a new leaf.  His home life and his relationship with his father improves.  He breakups with his cheerleader girlfriend and gets to know Ciera.  All of this will leave you wondering why he did not make these decisions sooner.

To me, this book is an example of how some kids have to deal with bullying everyday and how these kids are afraid to speak up.  In some cases these kids never make it out of the situation; whether it be ending their lives or whatever, but in other cases, much like the situation in the book, the ones being bullied changes those who bully them.  Life gets better and everyone moves on.

This book is definitely an "ugly-cry" type of book with all the feelings, love, and lose. You will most certainly want to read this when you have a few hours to yourself as you will not want to put the book down

I give this book: 5 out of 5 stars!
